In this story Peekay is told a lot of sayings that are like little riddles to us as readers. You just read them and they make you think and you want to compare them to things in life or things you have read in your book to see if you can put them together. Most of the time you can make go together just by looking a little deeper into the meaning. So I am going to try and compare one of these riddles the scene where justice was served.
“The searcher after truth must search with humanity. Ruthless logic is the sign of a limited mind. The truth can only add to the sum of what you know, while a harmless mystery left unexplored often adds meaning to life.” This is a quote from the book The Power of One. Doc, who is one of Peekay’s mentors, tells him this. I think that Doc was trying to say that you have take in other people’s perspectives on the truth on order to find the real truth. Ruthless logic to me is just finding one answer and not letting anyone tell you differently. So you can find the truth, but you should compare it to another person thought of truth, so you can explore the meaning of all truths. I think that this pretty much means keep an open mind to all ideas around you.
The example I pick to compare with Doc’s quote is when Captain Smit beats up Borman. I picked this one because it shows how a person can open their mind up to do what is right even if it goes against everything you grew up learning. Captain Smit beats up Borman, because Borman killed Geel Piet who was a kaffir. The significant thing about this is, is that it was a white man taking the side of a black man. Back then this was out of the ordinary and really showed the search for humanity in the prison system, since Captain Smit didn't use ruthless logic to treat the situation they were in.
In the end I think i compared this riddle with the scene from the book. I came to the conclusion that why evaluation of the riddle did match with the scene from the book. The end result by doing this comparison was that I found out that when the time comes a person will do what is write for everyone and not just certain individuals. In the end the searcher of truth must search with humanity.

Thoughtful, Josh. Nice job. Paraphrasing the quotation as "keeping an open mind" makes a lot of sense. You then carry this through to Smit. Well done.
ReplyDeleteStylewise, you need to be careful of the places where you are using "I" to indicate what you are doing in your mind..."I compared this riddle...the example I picked..." KG
